Operation Hammer - 1997, Iraq, Middle EastTurkish forces move into northern Iraq to take out Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) units. The action takes place during the Iraqi Kurdish Civil War between 12 May 1997 through to 7 July 1997. The Iraqi Kurdish Civil War was being fought between the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, however, the Kurdistan Workers Party are using northern Iraq as a base to carry of oprtation in Turkey. The action goes as far south as Erbil and further. The Kurdistan Workers Party managed to withdraw most of their units south and into Iran but there was a significant engagement in Erbil.
