Invasion of Goa - 1961, Portuguese IndiaIndian invasion of Goa in 1961. The Portugese knew that they would be outnumbered but hoped to delay the advance of the Indian Army so that they could appeal to the international community for their support in the situation. The Indian Army made a feigned attack from the south with an infantry company but their main assault was from the north and east with the 17th Division supported by the 50th Para Brigade Group. The main objectives were to capture Panaji and Mormugao. The Portugese hoped to lay mines along main roads, blow up major route and also to blow up bridges. However, they didn't have enough mines or engineering units. They managed to blow the bridge at Banastarim cutting off the routes to Panaji. The invasion lasted two days.
